Meet the artist - 5 facts about me

1. I've been drawing and painting since I was very young. It brings me happiness and a sense of fulfillment.
2. I worked in charities for many years, running large fundraising campaigns. It's an interesting job that has introduced me to wonderful and often funny people. One memorable experience was being a chaperone for Ant and Dec when they were under 18 at a private Stevie Wonder concert.
3. I grew up near trout streams in Hampshire, worked as a hat designer in Leicester, taught in Edinburgh, and then became a charity leader in London. I finally settled in Bristol 20 years ago to raise my two daughters and now enjoy being a grandparent to six.
4. I started painting professionally in 2019, just before the lockdown. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, it gave me more time to paint. Over the past few years, I've had the opportunity to exhibit my work alongside respected British artists like Grayson Perry, Antony Gormley, Maggie Hambling, and Anish Kapoor. I've sold artwork all around the world and now proudly call myself an artist.
5. As an artist, I find inspiration in capturing fleeting moments in nature. I'm captivated by the beauty of a pear, the delicate petals of a poppy before they fall, and the bloom of a plum. Spending time in nature, whether it's a short walk with my dog or a long hike with friends, fuels my creativity and continually inspires my art.

My Process

I aim to capture an essence rather than a literal interpretation of each subject. I enjoy not just the colour but the textural quality of paint and I work with both to achieve the finished painting. With a dandelion, for instance, I paint with needles to capture their distinctive petals and for my poppy paintings I make my own ‘palette knives’ from recycled plastic.

I have also become known for my interpretative seascapes, landscapes and abstract works, usually working in acrylics but with some collage and mixed media. Indeed many of my recent commissions have been for large, expansive seascapes as well as for the ever popular poppies and roses. 

My small fruit paintings evolved during the first UK lockdown, when art supplies were limited. Working on small canvases instead of my usual large boards evolved into a series of fruit paintings which focused on light and colour and I am still adding to this series.
