Meet the artist - 5 facts about me

1. I've been drawing and painting since I was very young. It’s more important now than ever as it gives me a sense of rest and fulfilment which helps in managing fatigue brought on by an autoimmune condition.
2. I worked in charities for many years, running large fundraising campaigns. It's an interesting job that has introduced me to wonderful and often funny people. One memorable experience was being a chaperone for Ant and Dec when they were under 18 at a private Stevie Wonder concert.
3. I grew up near trout streams in Hampshire, worked as a hat designer in Leicester, taught in Edinburgh, and then became a charity leader in London. I finally settled in Bristol 20 years ago to raise my two daughters and now enjoy being a grandparent to six.
4. I started painting professionally in 2019, just before the lockdown. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, it gave me more time to paint. Over the past few years, I've had the opportunity to exhibit my work alongside respected British artists like Grayson Perry, Antony Gormley, Maggie Hambling, and Anish Kapoor. I've sold artwork all around the world and now proudly call myself an artist.
5. I’m endlessly inspired by the transience of nature - the blush of a pear, the fragile fall of a poppy’s petals, the bloom of a plum. Time outdoors, whether a gentle walk with my dog or a long hike with friends, nourishes my creativity and continually shapes my art.

My Process

My aim is always to capture the essence of my subject, rather than a literal likeness. I’m drawn to colour, texture, and the expressive possibilities of paint - using both to create a sense of vitality and balance.

For a dandelion, I paint with needles to echo its intricate structure; for poppies, I craft palette knives from recycled milk cartons to evoke their delicacy and movement. Across my work runs a common thread: a search for clarity and simplicity. I strive to create paintings that feel both vibrant and serene - an uncluttered balance of colour and calm.

My first degree was in Geography, and my lifelong commitment to environmental causes naturally informs my art. It’s no surprise that my focus is on natural forms - flowers, fruit, and pollinators. I work to minimise my environmental impact through the use of bio-acrylic paints, eco-friendly cleaning products, recycled packaging, and sustainable transport choices.

Your paintings arrived safely and they look amazing! They will always be special as the last thing my late wife and I chose together.
